"Crews from the Seattle Department of Transportation began Friday night with work that will, over the course of the weekend, leave the bridge with a different exterior look while improving safety and preserving some of the bridge’s historic elements, said Norm Mah, spokesperson for SDOT.

The bridge was first built in 1910 and is one of the oldest bridges in Seattle, Mah said.

Crews will take out the existing external girders, beams and decking and break up the concrete approach slabs in favor of updating some portions and reviving the history of others.

Mah said decorative pedestrian railings, fascia girders, columns and ornamental capitals and corbels will be kept.

Traffic and pedestrian railings will be upgraded and improved for safety, curb ramps will be installed for ADA compliance, sidewalks will be “bulbed out” to slow traffic and shorten crossings, and the “skew” at the intersection of Yesler Way and Terrace Street will be lessened to improve visibility."
