Terminal 117 Cleanup

Environmental cleanup reduces contamination in key Seattle waterway

This significant and complex environmental project for the Port of Seattle was located along the west bank of the Lower Duwamish Waterway in South Park. It removed upland soil and river sediment to reduce hazardous material and contaminants to levels that would protect the river environment and reduce health risks to people in the area.

Major scopes of work included excavation and disposal of 60,000 tons of contaminated upland soils and 25,000 tons of contaminated riverbed soils, installation of 500 lineal feet of permanent sheet pile, import of 35,000 tons of clean material, and demolition of three large warehouse buildings. The work involved high concentrations of PCBs, dioxin/furans, and other contaminants requiring extensive worker safety precautions. IMCO worked with various environmental agencies, including the EPA, daily, to ensure all local and federal regulations were being upheld. Stringent safety and decontamination processes were required on site.
