Empowering Safety at IMCO
Building a Culture of Awareness, Partnership, and Impact

Empowerment
Empowerment in safety means each individual at IMCO Construction has the authority and responsibility to impact the work environment and the safety of the entire team. A strong safety culture requires team members who will speak up when they see something that needs attention. Tools for achieving this include:
Stop Work Authority: Stop work for a minute or as long as needed to re-set the plan, get the right tools and resources in place, and ensure the work can resume safely.
Work Observations: Share information, makes suggestions, recognize safe behavior, and request improvements.
Recognition
Hazards are often inexplicit and can also be hidden in plain sight. Individuals can help recognize hazards and make them known, speaking up when something needs attention, listening to others when a concern is raised. Tools to help with hazard recognition:
Job Hazard Analysis: Analyze each task before beginning work and put controls in place at the planning level.
Pre-use inspection and equipment inspections: Thoroughly inspect tools and equipment before using. Operators, fill out equipment inspections before operating.
Partnership
Learning from others, problem solving together, and supporting one another builds stronger teams and safer projects. Employ partnership through:
Work permitting: Partner with teams to plan and permit work activity, actively listen to ideas and concerns.
Participation: Stay engaged and share feedback at safety meetings.
Mentorship and support of new team members: Most safety incidents involve new employees. Teams supporting one another and mentoring people in new roles is critical.
Impact
The IMCO Construction safety program is called “Impact” because it represents the IMCO PACT to work safe. Teams are expected to commit to one another, to plan for safety, and to operate safely. A strong safety culture is grounded in core values and must be built on a foundation of trust and respect.
Employees can impact how projects operate safely by proactively sharing observations from the field through submitting work observations.
