IMCO Recognized for Route 2 Work in Guam
From IMCO's the DIRT Newsletter, Fall 2011
Before IMCO took over the Route 2 project in Guam, an unfinished culvert project sat idle while a river flowing under Route 2 ate away more and more of the earth beneath the asphalt, and concrete barriers eroded deeper into the roadway. Since taking over this summer, IMCO has repaired the damage caused by unforeseen rain and worked quickly to get the road back to working order. In September, after more than a year of lane closures and inconvenient detours for motorists, IMCO completed and reopened a portion of Route 2 near Cetti Bay and allowed drivers to travel south to Umatac without squeezing into one single lane.
IMCO is beginning work this month on a similar erosion control project about a half-mile north, near the Sella Bay trailhead. A Sella River tributary and storm water runoff have created a similar erosion problem near the trailhead, so IMCO crews will install large pipes to allow water to run beneath the road. Crews will close all but one lane of Route 2 for about a month.
“It took me by surprise, ... how quick that contractor (IMCO) put that asphalt on and opened the road up like that,” said acting Public Works Director Carl Dominguez. “What you see today is essentially the road the public is going to get, until we rebuild that road someday.”
