Contract workers continued removing 1,000 creosote-coated wooden pilings Wednesday at the old Berth 4 at the Port of Longview.
The port is demolishing the dock and building a new one in its place to use either as a parking space for ships or an export energy dock if a lease with Haven Energy is approved.
IMCO General Construction of Ferndale, Wash., began removing the pilings last week and will take about five weeks to finish the work, which will cost about $1.1 million.
This is the second phase of demolition of Berth 4, which used to host Continental Grain but has gone unused for years. The port is using property tax revenues to pay for the demolition.
Workers place a crane-mounted vibrating device to shake the pilings loose from river mud, then draw the pilings out for disposal in a landfill, according to the port.
