Madison Powerhouse Upgrades
Project Summary
IMCO upgraded the 109-year-old turbines and generators in the Madison Powerhouse owned by NorthWestern Energy. The original powerhouse building remained in place while four new turbine-generator units were installed.
The new generating units were updated to a modern design, moving from two turbines per unit to just one. In addition to increased energy capacity and efficiency, the new units are also more fish friendly.
The peak capacity of the powerhouse increased from 8 Megawatts to 12 Megawatts. The new turbines harness 95% of the power available and results in almost 15,000 additional megawatt-hours for an average water year.
